This course is aimed at Healthcare and Social Care Professionals working in healthcare facilities, nursing areas, intellectual disability services, community & social care settings where restrictive practices could be used either unintentionally or as a last resort to protect the service user. This course will enable the participant to understand what restrictive practices are and how they can impact a person’s human rights, quality of life, safety and dignity.

Bespoke Course
In advance of the course, we will contact the Person in Charge to tailor the training to the nursing or social care setting of the participants, exploring ways to minimise the use of restrictive practices and restraints within their workplace.
Course content
- Identifying and understanding types and effects of restrictive practices including -Psychotropic (Chemical), Environmental, Mechanical, Physical, Verbal restraint, and Seclusion
- Protection versus Abuse. Exploring how restrictive practices can be overused or misused and discussing how to balance the risks and rights of the person.
- Discussing the medical, legal, and ethical issues involved in the use of restrictive practices
- Looking at the research to challenge the view that some forms of Restrictive Practice are in the person’s best interests with a review and guidance on local practice
- Eliminating or reducing the need for restrictive practices by recognising how positive person-centered support strategies and de-escalating techniques that can be used as an alternative to restraint or restrictive practice.
- Discussing HIQA Standards, HIQA self-assessments, and guidance on restraint procedures.
- The Restrictive Policy & Procedures of the care setting will be discussed with the aim of implementing the policy into their daily practice.
Certificate
An NB Training Services, Restrictive Practices Certificate will be issued to all participants.
