Medication management refers to the safe, clinically effective and economic use of medicines to ensure that people using health and social care services get the maximum benefit from the medicines they need, while at the same time minimising potential harm. Medication safety involves giving the right person the right medication in the right dose at the right time and by the correct route. In line with the relevant national standards, service providers are expected to have arrangements in place to ensure the safe and effective use of medicines, including assessing, prescribing, dispensing, administering, documenting, reconciling, reviewing and assisting people with their medications.
Course Overview: This course will equip the participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to administer medication effectively and safely in healthcare, community and residential care environments and will be tailored to the residential service to include the key points of the services Safe Administration of Medication Policy, Procedure and accompanying paperwork.
Target Audience: This course is designed for Healthcare & Social Care staff working within the healthcare or social care sector, particularly those involved in the administration, assistance or prompting of medication.
Course Content:

Overview of the Services Policy on the Safe Administration of Medication. This will include the services Medication Administration documentation if made available to the tutor in advance of the course.

- Understanding the HIQA 10 Rights of medication administration.
- Checking and administering Medications using the HIQA 10 Rights.
- The importance of accurate documentation.
- Monitoring a person after Medication Administration

- The Law and Medicines in Ireland
- Management of refusal & missed doses of medications.
- Facilitating self-administration of medications.
- How to avoid errors

Duration: 4 hours.
The course will be delivered by a Reg Gen Nurse with experience of delivering this course in Residential and Health Care facilities.
As an in house programme this course can be amended for best fit and will be tailored to meet the needs of social care staff, in line with current HIQA Guidelines. Examples and Role-plays used will be specific to the group. Medication policies and procedures from the organisation will be covered on the course if provided to us in advance. MCQ will be completed by each participant. - MCQ's can be tailored to include specific local policy needs if required.
Certificate:
An NB Training Services, Safe Administration of Medication Certificate will be issued to all participants which will be valid for two years.
