People often ask me what the difference is in Paediatric First Aid Course and other First Aid Courses.
Initially it is probably best to define what First Aid is.
First Aid is the immediate help or treatment given to a casualty who has become ill or injured before the arrival of medical aid.
The casualty can be an adult, infant or child.
The typical First Aid courses focuses primarily on the adult, keeping the adult alive with CPR and use of a defibrillator, wounds, bleeding, fractures etc. This can often mean that the tutor spends the majority of the time on Adult First Aid with little time left to focus on Paediatric emergencies.
With Paediatric First Aid the main focus will be on the infant and child. A typical Paediatric First Aid course will; cover CPR & choking for child & infant as well as management of treating fevers, seizures, burns, drowning, viral illness, and meningitis.
NB Training serviceswill tailor the course content on the day to meet the needs of the group. For example if a person has a child with epilepsy, allergies or diabetes these would also be covered.
If YOUR child was seriously SICK, INJURED or had STOPPED BREATHING, would YOU know what to do?
Imagine if you child suddenly took ill and you had dialed 112 for an ambulance. What would you do next. Would you stand by helpless and in a panic or would you be able to assist your child in in the crucial minutes before the ambulance arrives.

In First Aid we talk about the ‘Golden Hour’ If you know what to do in an emergency situation it can have a huge bearing on the outcome. It can mean the difference between life and death or being injures or further injured just by your actions.
