Top 5 Tips for Manual Handling

Top Tips for Manual handling

What is Manual Handling I hear you say? Manual Handling is any transporting or supporting of a load, this includes lifting, pulling, pushing and carrying an object. Bad manual handing accounts for 1 of the 3 main accident triggers in the workplace.

Here are NB Training Services top 5 Manual Handling Tips to help prevent accidents in the workplace:

  1. Conduct a manual handling risk assessment – these should be reviewed regularly and carried out for each type of handling task.
  2. Ensure your employees have the correct training – it is very important that all training is up-to-date and in –line with current legislation otherwise what is the point in completing it?
  3. Wear suitable clothing – appropriate clothing is essential when carrying out any form of manual handling, especially if you are going to lift a heavy load! Tight clothing and unsuitable footwear such as heels are a ‘no no’ and they are going to hinder the lift.
  4. ‘Bend your knees’- never bend your back, always bend at the knees to pick up and lift the load.
  5. Last but certainly not least, know your limits – if you think the load is too heavy, don’t lift it! Ask someone for help or use a mechanical aid otherwise you risk doing serious damage to your back.
